Bharatpur, India

Bharatpur is a prime city of Rajasthan - a state known for its royalty and vivacity. The place dates back to an epic age and enjoys a rich history. In the 5th century BC, Matsya kingdom had grown at this place. As per the legends, the place is named after Bharat, the brother of Lord Rama. However, Laxman – another brother of Lord Ram is the family deity of royal family of Bharatpur. Bharatpur is extensively recognized as the Eastern Gateway to Rajasthan. It is located at a distance of 184 KM from Delhi. The city was founded by Maharaja Suraj Mal in 1733 AD. A great number of forts and palaces were built in the city by him all through the territory. Keoladeo Park

Bharatpur National Park is primarily known as the Keoladeo Ghana National Park. The name Keoladeo was derived from a temple, where main deity was Lord Shiva. This temple is located in the heart of the park. Ghana is a Hindi word that means dense and it refers to the dense forest. The park is the greatest attraction of the city and houses about 375 species of exotic birds, including residents and migratory. About 132 species of these birds live in this sanctuary. The migratory birds of park fly from various part of the world, including Europe, Siberia, China and Tibet. Bharatpur also serves as the home to animals like Sambar, Cheetal, Nilgai and Boar.

Bharatpur Palace

Bharatpur Palace offers information about a number of emperors having connection with this place. This is a gorgeous piece of architecture, which blends in Mughal and Rajputana architectural styles. The palace is home to a number of apartments, which are adorned with ornately planed floor tiles. The major central wing of the palace has been now converted into a museum. It exhibits a rich collection of artifacts dating back to the 2nd century. One can explore an array of remains, delicate sculptures and ancient inscriptions in this museum.

Ganga Mandir

Ganga Mandir is an architectural marvel in the city of Bharatpur. It is one of the best places to see in Bharatpur. The temple was constructed by Maharaja Balwant Singh and its construction started in 1845. It took around 90 years in its completion and then an idol of Goddess Ganga was installed in the temple by Brijendra Singh. Architecture of this temple blends together Rajputana, Mughal and South Indian styles. There are statues of other Gods and Goddesses in this temple.

Laxman Mandir

Laxman Mandir is the main deity of the royal family of the city. The temple is dedicated to the younger brother of Lord Ram, Laxman. Situated in the heart of the city, the temple is around 400 years old and displays typical Rajasthan style of architecture. Its entrance, ceilings, pillars, walls and arches are brilliantly carved with intricate stonework.

Banke Bihari Temple

Nestled in the heart of the city, Banke Bihari Temple is one of the most popular temples of India. It is spread over a huge land and considered to be the religious home of Lord Krishna. The temple depicts Brij architecture and houses statues of Lord Krishna and Radha in the main hall. These statues are adorned with jewels and attired beautifully. Lohargarh Fort

Lohagarh Fort is one of the must visit places in Bharatpur, which was built with a purpose to safeguard the city. The fort survived several attacks of the British. The architecture of fort is not known for its beauty but for the supremacy and brilliance exuded by this. It is different from any other fort of Rajasthan. There is a moat surrounded to this fort, which defense it against the enemy attacks. The fort houses a gate made of eight metals and is decorated with massive elephant paintings. Other attractions in this fort are Jawahar Burj, Kishori Mahal, Mahal Khas, Moti Mahal and Fateh Burj.

Government Museum

Government Museum was set up on 11th November, 1944 in Lohagarh Palace. This is a prime attraction of Bharatpur and displays around 581 stone sculptures, 196 miniature paintings, 10 inscriptions, 120 types of terracotta, 13 metal objects, 670 coins, 1966 weapons and 861 local art & crafts.

Banke Bihari Temple

Deeg Water Palace

Deeg Water Palace & Fort is one of the top places to visit near Bharatpur. It is situated 32 km away from city and was constructed in year 1772. It used to serve as the lavish summer resort of the rulers of Bharatpur State. The splendor of this palace is enhanced with the sprawling lush greenery. This strong and enormous fortress is now recognized for its wonderful water palaces, scenic gardens and amusing fountains.
