Rameshwaram, India

The holy island of Rameshwaram is located in the Gulf of Munnar at the extreme tip of Indian peninsula. This island is separated from the Indian mainland through Pamban Channel. Ramanathaswamy Temple

Ramanathaswamy Temple is an immaculate example of the popular Dravidian architecture. It attracts pilgrims in masses. This temple is most famous for its splendid corridors lined with huge sculptured pillars having elaborate designs and known for their style and rich carving. As per the legends, Lord Ram blessed this place by worshipping Lord Shiva here. In the inner sanctum of the temple, only Hindus are allowed to enter.

Dhanushkodi Temple

It is another top tourist attraction in Rameshwaram. This temple is the place where Vibishana, brother of Ravana, surrendered to Rama. The temple is located about 12 km from away from the town. The temple has the idols of Rama, Lakshmana, Sita, Hanuman and Vibhishana along with Rama.

Kothandaraswamy Temple

Located on the southernmost tip of the country, Kothandaraswamy Temple is the sole structure in the town that survived after the harsh cyclone of year 1964.

Adam

Adam's Bridge is an extended rambling passage through the Indian Ocean that almost connects the India to Sri Lanka. It is said that Lord Rama built this bridge to reach Lanka in order to rescue Goddess Sita from Ravana. The Adam's bridge is comprised of the chain of reefs, sandbanks and islets.

Dhanushkodi Beach

Dhanushkodi Beach is one of the famous places to visit in Rameshwaram. It is quite popular among the tourists. Its closeness to town makes it one of the most reasonably visited spots of the town. The beach features shallow water, which is ideal for swimming and sunbathing.

Gandamadana Parvatam

Gandamadana Parvatham is also famous as Rama Foot, which is the highest point in the town. The place has the imprints of Lord Rama on a Chakra. The best aspect of this point is that, one a panoramic view of the whole of Rameshwaram Island from here. It has stepped hall.

Jada Tirtham

Situated about 3.5 km away from Ramanathaswamy Temple, Jada Tirtham is popular among the Hindu devotees for featuring a holy pond. It is said that when Lord Ram was about to worship Shiva Lingam in Rameshwaram after killing Ravana, he washed his hair in this pond and made it divine. There is a temple located close to this pond.

Jatayu Tirtham Temple

The name of the temple tells you about the importance of this shrine. The temple was built in memory of the eminent eagle of Ramayana named Jatayu. He informed Lord Ram about kidnapping of Sita by Ravana. He sacrificed his life while fighting with Ravana to save Sita.

Sea World Aquarium

Sea World Aquarium is a not to be missed attraction of the town, which is home to a range of sea creatures. This interesting venue is an ideal place to be visited with kids as they love to be with aquatic species.

Five Faced Hanuman Temple

This is also a popular shrine in Rameswaram, which is dedicated to the Lord Hanuman. It is the place where Lord Hanuman revealed his five-faced incarnation. The shrine also features statues of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita, which were established here in 1964.

Pichavaram Backwaters

Pichavaram is the second largest mangrove forest in the world, which is a stunning natural property in South India. It is spread over an area of 2800 acres and enjoys graceful backwaters surroundings. Formed by the Vellar River and Coleroon River, these backwaters offer great water sports activities.

Nambu Nayagiamman Temple

It is a small South Indian temple, which is associated with the deep rooted beliefs of the location. The temple is only 8 km away from Ramanathaswamy Temple. In this temple, goddess Dakshina Kali is worshipped for good health, fortune and getting child. The temple is also said to have some curative properties.

Ariyaman Beach

It is an outstanding place to spend a relaxing evening with your family and friends. The beach is 150 meters wide and 2 km long. One can enjoy here boating or indulged into various water sports activities. The beach also features a children’s park, an aquarium and a museum. One can enjoy picnic party along the beachside in the perfect shading of Casuarina trees.

Lakshman Tirtham

It is a holy pond located close to the temple of Laxman – Ram’s brother. This divine place is located near Ramanathswamy Temple. This temple of Laxman enjoys several instances of Ramayana engraved on its walls. People visiting this temple often take a holy dip in this pond.
