Zanskar, India

Idyllically situated amidst the picturesque scenic locales of Ladakh region in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, Zanskar is amongst the most unexplored tourist places in the country. Zanskar literally means the Copper Star. Located around 105 KM away from Leh, Zanskar is as secluded as it can get and can only be accessed only from the month of 'April to August'. Best Places to Visit in Zanskar

Zongkhul Monastery:
It is the most impressive cave monastery in Zanskar and is around 300 years old. You can reach here by undertaking a trekking on the Padum-Kishtwar trekking route. The wall paintings and frescoes of this ancient monastery represent the rich cultural heritage of Tibetan Buddhism.

Stagrimo Monastery:
Stagrimo Monastery is located on a red ridge above the old town with having 30 resident lamas. The best way to reach up to the monastery is by walking an hour uphill from Padum town.

Stongdey Monastery:
This monastery is one of the most attractive features of tourist attractions in Zanskar. It is said to be the 2nd largest monastic establishment of the region. It closely associated with the Tibetan Yogi, 'Marpa'. This monastery is home to around 60 Gulukpa monks and houses various imposing shrines.

Penzella Pass:
This pass divides Zanskar with the scenic Suru Valley. The gripping natural beauty of the pass makes it a favorite haunt for the tourists. Moreover, from here tourists can find breathtaking views of neighboring countryside valleys and mountain ranges.

Phugtal Monastery:
This monastery is located in south-eastern Zanskar. It was founded by Gangsem Sherap Sampo in the early 12th century, the monastery is a unique construction built into the cliffside like a honeycomb. It houses 70 monks and has prayer rooms and library.

Other Activities to Enjoy at Zanskar:
You can enjoy river rafting in Zanskar on Zanskar River (Padum to Nemu and Phey to Nemu). Travel agents and tour operators offer alluring rafting packages on both of the stretches of the river. The ideal time for rafting expedition is in the months of July to September, when the Zanskar River is full of water.
