Jalandhar was known as ‘Prasthala’ during the period of ‘Mahabharata’ war. It is one of the key districts of the state of Punjab. There are several myths related to the name of this city. One legend says that it is named after a demon - Jaldhar. Another legend says that Jalandhar is derived from the word ‘Jalandhar’, which means an area inside the water. The place is cultivated by three rivers, Sutlej, Beas and Ravi. Situated on the rigorously irrigated plain between the Beas and Sutlej rivers, Jalandhar is an important destination of the state. Surrounded by Ludhiana in east, Kapurthala in west, Hosiharpur in north and Ferozepur in south, Jalandhar is a rapidly growing and urbanizing city of Punjab. It is spread over an area of about 3,401 km².
Jalandhar used to be the capital city of Punjab from the independence of India (1947) to the establishment of Chandigarh in 1953. At present, it has turned into a highly industrialized centre of commercial activity in latest years. Jalandhar worked as the seat of Nath movement between 8th and 10th century AD, with one of its greatest saint being Jalandhar Nath. From the last half of the 10th century up to AD 1019, the city became part of the Shahi Kingdom of the state of Punjab and Jalandhar became an important city of the region. In the year 1766, the city was captured by the Faizullahpuria confederacy. Ranjit Singh captured it in 1811 and in year 1846, the city became the headquarters of the territory acquired by the British post Sikh War. During the British rule, Jalandhar served as the headquarters of the Division and District of Jalandhar. Presently, it serves as one of the most significant tourist destinations of the state of Punjab. Situated in the heart of the city, Devi Talab Temple is one of the most visited places in Jalandhar located 1 km away from the railway station. The temple is supposed to be around 200 years old. The main deity of this temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga and is one among the 51 Shakthi pithas of India. An idol of Lord Shiva is enshrined in this temple that is called as Bhisan Bhairav. Devi Talab Temple has been recently renovated followed by a number of changes made.
St. Mary's Cathedral Church is one among the prime religious places of Christians and popular places to visit in Jalandhar. The old architecture of the church was constructed by Rev. Fr. John MacDonnell in 1947, in the memory of St. Patrick. In year 1955, the Catholic Mission of Punjab was raised to the status of Apostolic Prefecture and it was headquartered in Jalandhar. This well-known Shiv Mandir of Jalandhar city is situated at Gur Mandi, close to Imam Nasir Mausoleum. The temple dates back to the Lodhi Era and considered to have been constructed by the Nawab of Sultanpur Lodhi. The architecture of the temple beautifully blends Hindu and Muslim architectural style. The main gate of the temple is built in the style of a mosque and the rest of the structure is created in the Hindu style.
Sodal Temple is located close to Devi Talab Temple, on Sodal road. In this temple, Lord Sodal is worshipped. Every year on Anand Chaturdashi during mid-September, a fair is organized at the Samadhi of Baba Sodal. Inside the samadhi, there is a painted portrait of Baba Sodal. This is adorned with garlands and rosaries. The offerings of the temple are distributed among the pilgrims.
Located in the middle of the Jalandhar city, Imam Nasir Mausoleum offers an exclusive treat for the eyes. It is one of the oldest monuments in the city that has been named after the great saint - Imam Nasir. As per the archaeological surveys, the mausoleum is apparently an 800-year-old structure.
